Explicit and Systematic Multisensory Reading and Spelling Instruction
About Me
Hi there! I’m Chelsea, and I absolutely adore helping struggling readers! Teaching is my true calling. Back in 2015, I earned my special education credential, and in 2020, I became certified in the fantastic Orton-Gillingham methodology. It’s such a joy to use a multi-sensory approach to teach phonics, sight words, spelling, and fluency. I believe in making learning fun and engaging for my students. Let’s embark on this wonderful journey together.
Specializations
-
This skill involves being aware of the sound structure of language and includes various levels of awareness, such as: rhyming, segmentation, blending, isolation, deletion, and substitution.
-
Phonics is a method of teaching and learning to read and write by associating sounds (phonemes) with letters or groups of letters (graphemes). Phonics instruction typically focuses on the following key elements: letter-sound correspondence, sound blending, decoding, and encoding.
-
Morphology focuses on how words are constructed from smaller units of meaning, called morphemes. Morphemes are the smallest meaningful units of language and can be individual words or parts of words, such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Morphology explores the rules and patterns that govern how these morphemes are combined to create words.
-
Reading fluency pertains to the ability to read a text smoothly, accurately, and with comprehension. A fluent reader can read at an appropriate pace, without stumbling over words, and can understand the content being read. Fluent readers are often able to recognize and process words quickly, which is essential for effective reading comprehension.
-
Vocabulary is closely related to reading in several ways, and it plays a crucial role in a person's ability to understand and comprehend written text.
-
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and make sense of the text you read. It involves more than just recognizing and decoding words; it encompasses a deeper understanding of the content, the author's message, and the context in which the text is presented.
Virtual Zoom Lessons
-
Recognize, manipulate, and work with individual phonemes (sounds) in spoken words.
-
The three-part drill is a fundamental component of the OG method and is designed to help students develop and reinforce phonemic awareness and phonics skills. It involves three main parts: Auditory Drill (Hearing and Saying), Visual Drill (Seeing and Writing), and Tactile/ Kinesthetic Drill (Feeling and Doing).
-
Lessons build on previously learned skills, and new concepts are introduced in a cumulative and sequential manner. This helps students gradually master the language and spelling rules.
-
In Orton-Gillingham instruction, sight words may be introduced as "red words" or "rule-breaker words." These words are explicitly taught and practiced so that students can recognize them by sight, even if they don't adhere to standard phonics rules.
-
The purpose of word and sentence dictation in Orton-Gillingham instruction is to reinforce the student's ability to apply phonics and spelling rules. It provides an opportunity for students to practice both reading and writing, ensuring they develop strong decoding and encoding skills while building reading and writing fluency.
-
Regular reading aloud and listening to others read are important components of Orton-Gillingham instruction. These activities help learners develop prosody (the rhythm and intonation of speech) and fluency in oral reading.
